Internet Tethering on Android (IDEOS) (Tumia Ideos kama modem kwa ajili ya Internet)

In past days mobile broadband usb sticks / 3G modems have been the only way to have mobile internet access for your devices- laptops and other Wi-Fi devices. But now, with an Android phone, you can do just that with Internet tethering.

Hopefully with the pointers below you’ll be up and running in no time with your very own 3G mobile hotspot. The best part of it all is that it’s absolutely free (data charges still apply) on any Android 2.2+ powered device. If you've subscribed to the daily/monthly data packages that most mobile networks offer then this is a handy way to have access while on the move.

Android 2.2 Tethering

With the release of Android 2.2 (Froyo) Google brought Internet tethering to the masses.
If you have a Froyo powered device: IDEOS users, simply go to the wireless settings, enable it, and connect your phone to your laptop or computer via a USB or a Wi-FI connection to use your phone as a modem / hotspot. The steps are simply  Settings > wireless & networks > tethering&portable hotspot > tick the box > portable hotspot setting > configure.
You may have to adjust some settings in your OS to recognize and use the modem, but once it’s set up, it will work every time without much configuring. Some users are encountering issues tethering their phones, if the above does not work, try the option below

Wireless Tether for Rooted Devices

Wireless Tether for Root Users is a handy free app that provides Wi-Fi tethering for Android users. It is arguably one of the best reasons for anyone to root their Android phone (Google up rooting android devices for more info)
If you are not fortunate enough to have Froyo on your devices (Xperia devices) or just want the ability to wirelessly tether over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, this is the app for you (provided you are rooted).
Wireless Tether is extremely easy to use, set up, and secure. You can create your own network, WEP encryption, and MAC address access list. This is the easiest method since it requires no wires and you can connect to your wireless access point like any other Wi-Fi network.
You can download the app from here
